Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction of Phase I of the Cedar Point windfarm project began commercial operations last month in Ontario. The 105-megawatt (MW), Phase I project by Suncor Energy (NYSE:SU) (Calgary, Alberta) was burdened for years by protests, lawsuits, appeals and court challenges.
The project will use 46 Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) gas turbines. It is located in the Ontario townships of Plympton-Wyoming, Lambton Shores and Warwick. AMEC Foster Wheeler plc (NYSE:AMFW) (London, England) and Borea Construction (Etobicoke, Ontario) were selected as the general contractors for the project.
The project had a total investment value of $210 million, and will generate enough energy to power up to 40,000 homes. The windfarm was expected to create 15 full-time jobs. Construction of Phase II of Cedar Point is set to begin in early 2019. Siemens has a two-year service and maintenance agreement, ensuring the reliability and performance of the turbines.
