Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last June 14, Colombian utility Celsia S.A. E.S.P. (Medellin, Colombia) started commercial operations on a 20-megawatt (MW) Hidromontañitas small run-of-the-river hydro power plant, located in the Antioquia Department.

The facility is located on the left bank of the Rio Grande, between the municipalities of Santa Rosa de Osos and Donmatias. It is equipped with two 10-MW, horizontal-axis Pelton hydro turbine generator sets, provided by manufacturer Andritz Hydro (Graz, Austria). The construction of the plant took 34 months and required an investment of about $70 million.

In March 2012, a shareholders' meeting approved the change of the name of Compañia Colombiana de Inversiones S.A. E.S.P., the fourth major electricity producer and distributor in the country, to Celsia S.A. E.S.P as part of a restructuring process. Celsia owns the 610-MW, natural gas-fired Celsia ZF combined-cycle power plant (formerly known as Termoflores); the 169-MW Merilectrica natural gas-fired power plant; and the 19.9-MW Rio Piedras hydro power plant. In 2009, the company took control of the 50.1% of the equity of Empresa de Energia del Pacifico S.A. E.S.P. (EPSA) (Yumbo, Colombia), owner of 14 power plants with an overall capacity of 960 MW.

In the end of May 2012, EPSA started commercial operations of the Alto Tula run-of-the-river hydro power plant, located on Tulua River in the Valle del Cauca Department. Alto Tulua Hydro is equipped with two Francis hydro turbine generators, also provided by Andritz, with a total installed capacity of 20 MW.
