Chile’s Colbun Sets Inauguration of Hydroelectric Power Station for October

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Colbun’s subsidiary Hidroelectrica Guardia Vieja S.A., HGV, expects a new hydroelectric plant to go online next month. The company has invested $63 million in the plant, which will be in the Aconcagua River high basin, 100 kilometers northeast of Santiago de Chile, the Andean country’s capital city.

HGV, the project operator, has been one of the first private companies worldwide to develop hydroelectric projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol. HGV has already built a hydroelectric plant with this pattern, Chacabuquito.

The Hornitos Hydroelectric Project consists of a run-of-river power plant of 55-megawatt (MW) capacity that will use water from the Aconcagua River. The project connects to the Fifth Region at a 220/110-kilovolt subsystem within the Central Interconnected System, and energy will be delivered to industrial and residential consumers in the area. Its design consists of a 55 MW Italian Va Tech Pelton Vertical Turbine power generator that will use water from the Juncal and Juncalillo rivers, tributaries of the Aconcagua River.

The new power plant will be in cascade with three other plants: Aconcagua (87 MW), Los Quilos (39 MW) and Chacabuquito (25 MW). These plants began operations in 1994, 1939 and 2002, respectively. Aconcagua is formed by three small plants: Blanco (58 MW), Juncal (27 MW) and Juncalito (2 MW).

During the first semester of 2007, Colbun (Santiago de Chile, Chile) generated 3476 GWh of hydroelectricity and 2302 GWh of thermal electricity. In regard to the latter, production has been reduced 24% compared with the first semester of 2006 because of the gas shortage in Argentina.
