China Plans to Build More Solar Power Generation Project Through Public Bidding

The purpose is to reduce the cost of solar power generation, and to increase the proportion of renewable energy in total energy consumption, announced the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) recently.

China is planning to introduce “reasonable competition” into the new industry in order to improve the output of solar power generation, said Shi Lishan, Director of the Renewable Energy Division, Energy Bureau of the NDRC, after he attended an industry meeting on May 26, 2007.

China plans to invest $196 billion over 15 years and by 2020 hopes to improve the use of renewable energy and the reduction of pollution. China wishes to improve the proportion of renewable energy, including wind power, solar energy and bio-energy, in total energy consumption to 16% by 2020.

“Important measures on promoting the use of solar energy will be launched by the state next year,” said Shi Lishan. China expects that the installation capacity of solar power will reach 300 MW by 2010, and 1,800 MW by 2020. To achieve this target would be a big challenge without further action.

Current utilization of renewable energy in China is equivalent to about 180 million tons of standard coal per year, and the proportion in total energy consumption is about 7.3%.

Coal is still occupying the major part in the total energy consumption in China. Following the economic development and increasing concern on environment protection and pollution control, the country is doing its best to control the use of fossil energy and encourage the use of renewable new energies, such as wind power, solar energy and bio-energy.
