China’s Baise City to Upgrade Grids Amid Growing Pressure

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China's Baise City will receive $132 million before 2010 to upgrade the city's power grids as it faces growing pressure for more electricity from the city's fast-developing aluminum industry.

Guangxi Power Grids (Nanning City, Guangxi), a subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid (Guangdong province, China), will sponsor the investment. Among the $132 million investment, $29 million will be invested within 2007.

In 2006, Baise, the biggest city in the Guangxi Autonomous Region, consumed 6.86 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, in which 5.885 kWh was provided by Guangxi Power Grids.

However, the need for power has grown drastically in recent years. In 2010, the total yearly consumption of electricity will increase to 22.5 billion kWh, of which the aluminum industry will use 18 billion kWh.

Baise has become Guangxi's heavy industry base. According to the city's plan before 2010, Baise will have a yearly capacity of 5 million tons of aluminum oxide, 1.5 million tons of electrolytic aluminum and 1.2 million tons of deep processed aluminum.

A project sponsored by Guangxi Huayin Aluminum Company Limited (Baise, Guangxi) (a subsidiary of China Minmetals Corporation (Beijing, China)), a project sponsored by Yinhai Aluminum Corporation (Baise, Guangxi), a project sponsored by Shandong Xinfa Aluminum Electricity Group (Chiping County, Shandong Province) and several others are under construction or finished.

Baise has 524 million tons of bauxite, 35.7 million tons of manganese ore and half a billion tons of coal. Its gold deposit, about 70 tons, ranks No. 1 in Guangxi.

Baise's Pingguo Aluminum Company is one of China's nine non-ferrous mineral bases, producing 1.7 million tons of aluminum oxide and 380,000 tons of aluminum ingots in 2004.
