Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China's DC power transmission lines have reached 7,085 kilometers (km), and capacity has reached 18.6 million kilowatts (kW), ranking the country first in transmission length and capacity. The design, construction, operation and equipment-manufacturing level for China's ultra-high-voltage DC-power-transmission project has also achieved an internationally advanced level.
China has seven DC-power-transmission projects in operation: Gezhouba-Shanghai, Sanxia-Changzhou, Sanxia-Guangdong, Sanxia-Shanghai, Tianshengqiao-Guangdong and Guizhou-Guangdong I & II. China also has the Lingbao DC back-to-back project, according to information from the eighth International High Voltage DC Power Transmission Users Conference held at Yichang in central China's Hubei Province on October 22, 2007.
In 2020, China is expected to have 15 ultra-high-voltage DC-power-transmission projects in operation -- the most in the world -- and maintain its No. 1 rank.
In order to optimize the configuration in energy resources, China is carrying out its strategy of ultra-high-voltage power transmission, large nuclear power, large hydropower and large coal power. By the end of 2020, China will establish an ultra-high-voltage AC grid covering northern China, central China and eastern China. The country will complete ±800 kilovolts through Xiangjiaba-Shanghai, Jinping-southern Jiangsu, Xiluodu-Zhuzhou and Xiluodu-western Zhejiang for a total of 15 ultra-high-voltage DC-power-transmission projects, including about 30 ultra-high-voltage DC-conversion stations, 26,000 km of transmission lines and 94.4 million kW of transmission capacity, said Shu Yinbiao, Vice President of the State Grid Corporation of China (Beijing).
Accompanying the swift economic development in China, annual growth in power consumption surpassed 14% in the past three successive years. About 80% of China's hydropower resources are in the western region, but more than two-thirds of the energy demands are concentrated in the east coastal region. The adoption of ±800 KV ultra high voltage DC power transmission could realize long-distance and large-scale power transmission from the west to the east and is important in the optimization of configuring energy resources.
