City of Hialeah Plans to Commission Seawater Desalination Plant in Florida by October

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The city of Hialeah, Florida, is currently proceeding with final construction activity on a new seawater desalination plant that has been in the works since 2008. The plant is 85-90% complete, and the majority of the wells, pumps, chemical injection and reverse osmosis systems have been installed in preparation to begin final commissioning in hopes of having the plant producing drinking water for approximately 189,000 city residents.

The company selected Inima USA Corporation (Sunrise, Florida), a subsidiary of Obrascon Huarte Lain SA (Madrid, Spain), as the engineering, procurement, construction contractor and operator of the plant from a shortlist of five firms responding to an RFQ issued in late 2008.

Inima selected local construction firm AECOM (Sunrise, Florida) to manage the estimated $130 million project. The plant, which has 14 brackish water intake wells, will produce 10 million gallons per year of potable water and is expandable to 17 million gallons per day that will be put into place as demand for fresh water increases.

Currently there are three operational desalination plants in Florida. The largest, Tampa Bay Water's Clearwater plant, which produces 25 million gallons per year of drinking water, and Miami Dade Water & Sewer Department's central and south plants in Miami support power generation. Additional plants are planned to be built by the City of Clearwater, the City of Tarpon Springs and a third plant in Miami by Miami Dade Water & Sewer in Miami Heights. Plans for the Saint Johns River Water Management District desalination facilities in Titusville and Palm Coast, Florida, have been put on-hold.
