Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The city of Memphis, Tennessee, municipal utility - Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (MLGW) - continues to study the construction of a natural gas-fired power station. Towards the end of the 1990's, due to the increased costs of electricity, MLGW started to study the possibility of breaking away from its electrical supplier, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee). At that time, MLGW began developing a 520-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power project, but that was put on hold, due to the spiraling cost of natural gas. Now, while MLGW is negotiating a power contract with TVA as its primary power source, the municipality continues to evaluate the construction of either a combined-cycle, or single-cycle peaking power station. Construction of its own plant would provide MLGW with some independence and flexibility from a single source power supply.
