Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking projects valued at more than $6.9 billion involving design-build and construction firm Clayco Construction Company (St. Louis, Missouri). The projects cover a diverse range of sectors, including electric vehicle components, breweries, and distribution and warehouse facilities.

Outside of the Great Lakes region, the U.S. Southeast is becoming a hub of automotive activity, and the rise in electric vehicles can be seen here. Clayco is acting as general contractor and construction manager for SK Holding's (Seoul, South Korea) Phase II development of its automotive lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Commerce, Georgia, about 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. The 1.5 million-square-foot Building 2 will have a production capacity of 11.7 gigawatt-hours per year. The plant plans to supply Ford Motor Company's (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) electric vehicle production facility in Kentucky. The project kicked off last summer and is planned for completion in the first half of 2023.
A third plant could potentially be built at the Georgia site, with less square footage but similar production capacity to Plant 2. Construction on this facility, which Industrial Info has given a 70%-80% of moving forward as planned, could potentially kick off by the end of this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can view the project reports for Plant 2 and Plant 3.
Clayco also is acting as the general contractor on an automotive battery plant expansion for Volkswagen (Wolfsburg, Germany) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
According to industry publications, the rise in hard seltzer sales in the U.S. has been phenomenal over the past few years, and garnering the largest market share in the U.S. market is White Claw brand. To keep up with this growth, White Claw parent company Mark Anthony Group (Vancouver, British Columbia) late last year began construction on a grassroot brewery and distribution center for the product in Columbia, South Carolina. Clayco was awarded the design-build contract for the facility. According to ABC Columbia, the 1.2 million-square-foot facility will be one of the largest breweries built in the U.S. in the past 25 years. The facility also will produce Mike's Hard Lemonade and Cayman Jack Cocktails, demand for which is increasing in the southern U.S. The facility is expected to begin operations later this summer. Several of Clayco's active projects involve those for e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Among the largest of these is an 820,000-square-foot warehouse being built on the site of a former General Motors (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) assembly plant near Wilmington, Delaware. Clayco is the general contractor on the project. According to local news media, the last car rolled off the line at the General Motors plant more than 10 years prior to Amazon announcing its brownfield project last year. The facility will ship out small items such as books, electronics, household goods and toys. Amazon says it plans to hire 1,000 new workers for the site in time for the 2021 holiday season. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. Clayco also is at work on Amazon projects in Michigan, Washington, Oklahoma, Maryland and Missouri.
