Clearwater Breaks Ground for Tissue Mill in North Carolina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Clearwater Paper Corporation (NYSE:CLW) (Spokane, Washington) has broken ground at the future site of a tissue paper mill in Shelby, North Carolina. Clearance has begun on a 100-acre site at Washburn Switch Road in Cleveland County, and construction will begin this fall.

Last month, Clearwater announced plans to invest between $260 million and $280 million to build a tissue paper mill and converting plant. The facility will have an annual production of approximately 70,000 tons per year of tissue paper and about 10 million cases of finished products. Operations will begin with two converting lines in the third quarter of 2011. The new paper machine is slated to come online in the third quarter of 2012.

The Shelby mill will utilize purchased pulp to produce paper on a through-air-dried (TAD) tissue paper machine and will have up to seven converting lines.

Baisch Engineering (Kaukauna, Wisconsin) is providing process engineering, and ARCO Design-Build (Atlanta, Georgia) will deliver 672,000 square feet of building space.

Clearwater has manufacturing facilities in Arkansas, Idaho, Nevada and Illinois.
