CNNC Awards General Contract for Uranium Mining and Smelting Project in Guangxi

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Shaoguan Jinyuan Uranium Industry Company Limited (Shaoguan, Guangdong), a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) (Beijing) and the owner of the Xincun Uranium Mining & Smelting Project in Guangxi, has signed a general contract with the Fourth Institute of Nuclear Engineering Company Limited (FINEC) (Shijiazhuang, Hebei), also a subsidiary of CNNC, on April 17, CNNC announced. According to the contract, FINEC will be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction.

The project is located at Xincun Town of Rongshui County in southwestern China's Guangxi Autonomous Region, a major uranium mining zone in southern China. Construction will include production structures, living camps, slop protection, tailings reservoir and silo. A preliminary investigation was completed by Liuzhou Engineering Survey and Investigation Institute on Nuclear Power Industry (Liuzhou, Guangxi) in December.

FINEC is the first and only large-scale uranium mining and smelting designer in China. It was established in 1958 and is a National Class A comprehensive engineering institute in design, supervision, consultancy and general contracting in China.

China currently has 11 nuclear power units with a total installed capacity of 9.1 gigawatts (GW) in operation -- 24 nuclear power units with a total planned capacity of about 25.4 GW received approval for construction, and another nine nuclear power units are in preparations. According to the most recent update to the middle and long-term development plans for nuclear power, China's installed capacity of nuclear power in operation will be expanded to 70 GW in 2020.

In order to meet increasing uranium demand in the power sector, CNNC has increased efforts in the exploitation of uranium resources in China and abroad. The implementation of the general contracting system is just one of the steps toward its goal.
