Coal Plant in Colorado Remains Offline for Repairs

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Pawnee Power Station, owned by Public Service Company of Colorado, was shutdown on Friday to make repairs to its boiler. Public Service Company, which is a subsidiary of Xcel Energy (NYSE:XEL) decided to bring the 500-megawatt (MW) coal unit offline when bottom ash was found in the boiler. Bottom ash is formed when parts of coal are not burned completely. Once the unit was offline, maintenance personnel went further into the boiler and noticed the presence of clinkers. Clinkers are merely masses of fuel that have been dumped in the boiler which are not totally burned. Bottom ash can turn into clinkers and both are masses that have fallen in the water of the boiler and aren’t fully combusted.

The unit was to return Monday, but after further investigation, plant contacts have decided to perform more thorough inspections. The new return date has been estimated to be an additional 4-5 days.
