Colombia Aims for 670 MW of New Renewable Capacity in 2025

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Colombian Association of Renewable Energy (SER) expects 670 megawatts (MW) of new electric capacity from medium and large-scale renewable-energy projects to be brought online this year. Among the technologies are wind, solar, hydrogen, geothermal and small-scale hydroelectric.

Overall, 19 new renewable projects could be brought online across Colombia in 2025, totaling investments of US$500 million. Two of those projects started operations last month.

Cundinamarca will be the Colombian state to see the most new capacity starting operations with 310 MW, followed by Tolima with 180 MW, and Atlantico in the third place with 50 MW.

Together, the new projects will reduce emissions by 1.1 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, in addition to the current 3.2 million tons of CO2 eliminated by the 71 renewable energy plants operational across Colombia, which have a combined capacity of 1.8 gigawatts (GW).

For 2026 and 2027, SER expects 166 new projects with a total capacity of 5.4 GW to be under construction. Of those, three projects with a capacity of 419 MW already have started construction, including two solar power plants that will be operational by next year.

Another 15 projects with a capacity of 825 MW already have obtained their permits and are ready to be built, while 92 projects are in other developmental stages, with a combined capacity of 4.2 GW.

Among the key challenges renewable-energy companies face in building new projects in Colombia, according to SER, are waiting times for obtaining environmental and technical permits, delays in grid connections, and long-term regulatory stability.
