Colorado Power Developers Ramping up to Nearly Double State's Generation Capacity

Click to view an IIR Attachment Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Colorado currently has about 13,300 megawatts (MW) of operational generation capacity. Developers are looking to add power generation capacity at 17 sites that could increase that capacity by about 6,450 MW to bring the state's total generation up to about 19,750 MW.

The new generation being proposed is predominantly coal-fired generation with about 4,440 MW, or about 69%, of the proposed new power generation. About 890 MW, or 13.8%, will utilize natural gas. The remaining 1,120 MW to be built will consist of renewable energy resources: 718 MW from wind, 400 MW from hydropower and 2 MW from solar.

The new generation is expected to be added beginning with the 2-MW Solar Project at the Denver International Airport and a 13.5-MW coal-fired unit at Lamar Power Station beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008. The other projects are scheduled to be built between 2009 and the 2015.
