Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Verbund-Austrian Thermal Power GmbH & Company KG (Graz, Austria) is advancing with construction of the 830-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle power plant in Mellach in the Austrian county of Styria. Construction began in January of this year, and completion is set for December 2011. The new facility is being erected close to the existing 246-MW coal-fired power plant, which became operational in 1986. The Austrian energy provider will invest $785 million in the project.
General contractor for the project is Siemens AG Austria (Vienna, Austria), which is responsible for the engineering and project management. Siemens AG Austria, part of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany), will also supply the turbines.
The plant will be equipped with two single-shaft natural-gas-fired 290-MW combustion turbines, two heat recovery steam generators, and two 135-MW steam turbines, with a 59% electrical efficiency. Producing electricity and heat (250 MW), the efficiency increases to 70%. About 500 workers will be employed during peak construction.
The contract for building the new Verbund power plant is the largest ever signed for Siemens AG Austria. Siemens plans to expand activities in Austria by installing a power-plant team for turbine maintenance, consiting of 100 experts.
Verbund-Austrian Thermal Power GmbH & Company KG constructs and operates thermal power plants with and without combined power/heat generation. The company is a subsidiary of Verbund and operates power plants in Mellach, Duernrohr and Neudorf-Werndorf with a total capacity of 815 MW.
