Summary

Industrial Info Resources is tracking more than 75 active construction equipment-manufacturing projects in the U.S. worth $2 billion, which includes more than $620 million worth under construction and a planned investment from Caterpillar.

U.S. Construction Equipment Manufacturing

According to Industrial Info Resources data, there are more than 75 active projects involving U.S. construction equipment manufacturing, worth about $2 billion, that are in various stages of development from early planning through construction. More than $620 million worth of these are presently under construction, while another $1 billion is attributed to a single large project from Caterpillar.

Caterpillar in late September said it planned to invest about $1 billion to expand manufacturing capacity of compact track loaders and telehandlers by building a manufacturing plant in Sanford, North Carolina, south of Raleigh.

According to the company, compact track loaders and telehandlers are used across construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling applications. They are relied on to move materials, manage jobsites, support workforce productivity and complete critical work safely and efficiently.

Industrial Info Resources offers more information on the project in its Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Plant and Project databases, where readers can find details--including construction schedules, investment values and necessary equipment--in a plant profile and project report.

By the end of the year, JCB is expected to open its grassroot plant in San Antonio, Texas, for the manufacturing of telescopic handlers and aerial work platforms for North American customers. The initial 1 million square feet could be expanded with subsequent expansions. Readers can view the related project reports and plant profile.

Meanwhile, John Deere's $70 million+ expansion of an excavator plant in Kernersville, North Carolina, is nearing completion. View the project report here.

KMW Limited, which traditionally develops farm equipment, is preparing to begin construction on a robotic machinery plant in Sterling, Kansas, which is designed to produce systems used for loaders, backhoes and other agricultural necessities. Readers can learn more from a detailed project report.

Industrial Info Resources offers a full list of active projects involving U.S. construction equipment manufacturing.

Caterpillar and John Deere, in particular, have cited infrastructure spending and data center construction as main U.S. demand drivers.

Supporting Data Centers

Caterpillar and John Deere each support data center construction, but through different applications.

Deere provides site preparation equipment such as excavators, bulldozers and loaders.

Caterpillar supports data centers as well, but not through its Construction Industries segment, but another one entirely: the Power & Energy unit supplies microgrids and generators for power as well as other electrical infrastructure.

Industrial Info Resources is tracking data center projects featuring Caterpillar's generators across the U.S., including sites in Manassas, Virginia, Cook County, Illinois, and Maricopa County, Arizona.

Key Takeaways
  • $2 billion: Total investment value of U.S. projects for manufacturing construction equipment.
  • More than $600 million worth is under construction, while Caterpillar is planning a $1 billion investment.
