Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--One of Chile's mid-sized electricity providers, Empresa Electrica Guacolda S.A. (Santiago, Chile) has started construction of a $130 million 152-megawatt (MW) Coal-Fired Unit 4 addition at its existing Guacolda power station. The power station is located two kilometers northeast of the City of Huasco, which is approximately 700 kilometers north of Santiago.
The contract calls for the installation of a boiler, steam turbine, generator and steam condenser. The turnkey contract was awarded to one of Japan's leading manufacturers of large power systems, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (MHI) (Tokyo). MHI will manufacture the boiler at its Yokohama Dockyard and Machinery Works, while the steam turbine and steam condenser will be manufactured at its Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works. MHI's sister company Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TYO:6503) (Tokyo) will supply the generator.
Construction began in June of this year and is scheduled to be commissioned by the second quarter of 2010. This unit addition will be the fourth such unit that MHI has installed at this site. Construction on Unit 3 began in the third quarter of 2007 and is expected to be completed and operational by the third quarter of 2009. Unit 4 will be identical to Unit 3, which consists of a pulverized coal-fired boiler to produce steam to drive the 152-MW steam turbine/generator set. With the addition of both units, the total generating capacity of the Guacolda site will increase to 614 MW. This increase in capacity will help meet the rising electricity demands that are accompanying Chile's steadily expanding economy. Industrial Info will continue to monitor this project as it goes through its various stages of construction and development.
