Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Construction of Zhangze Electric Power Company Limited's (SZ:000767) (Taiyuan, Shanxi) 600-megawatt (MW) Houma Power Plant Cogeneration Expansion kicked off on March 4, 2013, according to an announcement from Shanxi Electric Power Design Institute (SEPDI) (Taiyuan, Shanxi), the project designer, on March 7.
The Houma Power Plant was built in 1965, with the first unit commissioned in August 1968. The plant currently has two 50-MW combined heat and power units (commissioned in September 2002 and April 2004) in operation. All four 25-MW units built in phases I and II were shut down in 2007. The cogeneration expansion project is a key project to be built as a way of replacing small units with larger ones in the Shanxi province.
According to plans, the project will involve two 300-MW, air-cooling, coal-fired units, together with sewage water processing; total flue gas desulfurization and denitration; an enclosed coal yard; electrical dust removing; and slag comprehensive utilization facilities to replace the four 25-MW units built in phases I and II.
Early in 2009, SEPDI kicked off the detailed engineering for the project. After that, the project was on hold for more than 20 months. So far, SEPDI has completed about one-third of the construction drawings to meet the demand of continuous construction. SEPDI has assigned representatives to the site to solve any technical issues in the construction drawings and to ensure a timely, high-quality completion of the project.
According to the schedule, the units will begin operations in June and July 2014, respectively. Upon completion, the project will be able to supply heat to a total area of 12 million square meters and replace 190 small-size, coal-fired heating boilers scattered in its service zone.
