Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--Following final approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in August 2012, the site preparation of Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group Company Limited's (Hangzhou, Zhejiang) 2,000 megawatt (MW) Taizhou No. 2 Power Plant grassroot project kicked off in September in Sanmen County of Taizhou City, according to a recent announcement from the local government.

As reported, the Taizhou No. 2 Power Plant is to be built in a new site near Niushantu village so small units can be replaced by larger ones. Six 135-MW, coal-fired units in the existing Taizhou Power Plant will be shut down, as well as other small, coal-fired units in Zhejiang province. Two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired units, together with associated, highly efficient, electrostatic dust removing devices, flue gas desulfurization devices, selective catalyst reduction devices and online flue gas monitoring devices, as well as seawater secondary circulation and cooling systems, will be built in the initial stage, with a total investment of about $1.3 billion.

East China Electric Power Design Institute (Shanghai), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) (Beijing), is responsible for the design and engineering of the project. Gezhouba Group No. 2 Engineering Company Limited (Chengdu, Sichuan), another subsidiary of the CEEC, is responsible for the site preparation of the project at present. According to the schedule, the project will be connected to Zhejiang grid via 500-kilovolt transmission lines and fully completed by the end of 2015.

Upon completion, the project will be able to replace a total of 1,132 MW of small, coal-fired units. Based on the calculation of the same output, the project could save about 1 million metric tons of standard coal and reduce the emission of 36,000 metric tons of sulfur dioxide, as well as 3.66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, every year.
