Copper Project Finishes Pre-Project Construction in Inner Mongolia, North China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). A copper developing project with a total investment of $19.6 million has started in Aohan Qi in Chifeng City in North China’s Inner Mongolia.

The project includes the exploitation and processing of copper and other metals; the daily processing capacity will be 10,000 tons when complete. The construction began in April of this year. Pre-project work, such as the construction of hydroelectric facilities, land conversion of concentrating mills and tailing dams as well as other business procedures for the project, has almost finished. It is expected to go into production in the first half of 2008.

According to the local government, the key project of the city was funded by Jilin-based Yongchang Group Limited in Northeast China. A capital of $1.9 million is currently in place.

The project is located in a village in the southern part of Aohan County. Total extractable copper reserves in this county are estimated to amount to 87,400 tons. Further investigation and survey have proven over 250,000 tons of potential copper in this area. This area also has rich mineral resources like iron, gold, anthracite coal, limestone, fluorite, silica and pyrophillite besides copper. The gold deposit in the county has an annual production of 1,875 kg.

China’s consumption of copper ranks first in the world but copper production from mines is only the seventh largest globally. China’s copper concentrates imports reached 4.06 million tons in 2005, ranking it second in the world after Japan. This figure is estimated to be 4.5 million in 2010. The eleventh five year plan (2006-2010) says China is giving more support for copper exploitation projects and plans to enlarge its remaining mines.
