Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plans are in motion by CPS Energy (San Antonio, Texas), the nation's largest municipally owned energy company, to install peaking capacity at the V.H. Braunig Power Station near Elmendorf, Texas. The station has three natural-gas-fired steam turbine units with a combined capacity of 894 megawatts (MW). The first unit began commercial operation in 1966 with the last one coming online in 1970.
In addition to the new peaking capacity at Braunig, CPS is well under way on the construction of the 800-MW coal-fired Unit 2 at the J.K. Spruce Station. Construction on this unit started in 2006, and plans are to begin commercial operation in 2010.
