CUH2A and Gilbane Team Up to Build $80 Million New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction is under way in Ithaca, New York, on the $80 million New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC). The majority of the project, which began construction earlier this summer, is being funded by a $56 million state grant, with the remainder coming from Cornell University and other sources. The 125,000-square-foot building was designed by CUH2A (Princeton, New Jersey), and its construction is being managed by Gilbane (Albany, New York). The new center will replace and expand upon the antiquated existing AHDC facilities, which date back to 1978.

Once complete in 2010, the AHDC will centralize more than 200 scientists and other employees who currently work at 12 different sites. The focus of study will be on infectious and zoonotic diseases, including both diagnosis and control. Researchers will be able to work in laboratories outfitted to biosafety levels 2 (BSL-2) and 3 (BSL-3). In addition to multidisciplinary laboratories, a necropsy facility is being added. Animals studied will include birds and fish, as well as domestic farm animals, including cows and chickens.

The ADHC, run under a partnership between Cornell University and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, currently conducts approximately 1 million diagnostic tests per year, drawn from 150,000 cases out of the United States and Canada. A member of the National Animal Health Laboratory, the center is the only full-service animal disease diagnostic laboratory in New York.
