Peabody Energy Files for Bankruptcy - Coal miner Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU) (St. Louis, Missouri) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday, listing $10.1 billion in debt.

CRUDE OIL
EIA: U.S. Crude Inventories Rise - The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that U.S. crude oil inventories rose by 6.6 million barrels for the week ending April 8 to a record 536.5 million barrels. Gasoline inventories fell by 4.2 million barrels.

China's First-Quarter Crude Imports Increase - China imported approximately 7.34 million barrels per day of crude oil from January through March of this year, representing an increase of 6% from the previous quarter and 13% up from the same period last year.

Southern Company Plans $17.9 Billion Capital Program for 2016-2018 - The Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia), one of the nation's largest utilities, has shared with investors its three-year, $17.9 billion capital spending plan. That sum excludes the $8 billion Southern plans to spend to acquire AGL Resources Incorporated (NYSE:GAS) (Atlanta, Georgia), a gas utility with operations in the Southeast and Midwest.

Alcoa Maintains Quarterly Capex Despite Drop in Profits - Alcoa Inc.'s (NYSE:AA) (New York City, New York) capital expenditures for the just-ended first quarter 2016 were roughly flat with those of the same period a year earlier, despite an 85% drop in profits over that time frame, the aluminum producer reported.
