PIPELINES
Kinder Morgan Secures Financing for Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion - Four Canadian banks have agreed to back Kinder Morgan Canada Limited's (TSX:KML) $5.5 billion Trans Mountain pipeline that will bring crude from the Canadian oil sands around Edmonton to Vancouver, British Columbia, according to U.S. Securities and Exchange filings. FINANCIAL
Hedge Funds Hold Near Record in Petroleum Shorts - Reuters market analyst John Kemp discusses how front-month Brent futures prices are up by about $2 a barrel since touching a low of $44 on June 21, which could herald a break in the downtrend that had been in place since late May, saying that rising prices most likely reflect hedge funds covering some short positions rather than a fundamental reappraisal of the outlook for supply, demand and inventories. (Reuters)
Canada M&A at High on Energy Purchases - Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in Canada are set for the strongest start in a decade as foreigners sell their oil sands investments. There have been about $132 billion of transactions recorded this year, the highest since $156.5 billion in the first half of 2007, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Local companies snapped up these energy assets, boosting domestic M&A to a record. (Bloomberg)
CRUDE OIL
U.S. Petroleum Products and Crude Exports Have Doubled Since 2010 - The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports that U.S. crude oil and petroleum product gross exports have more than doubled over the past six years, increasing from 2.4 million barrels per day (BBL/d) in 2010 to 5.2 million BBL/d in 2016. POWER
U.S. Regulator: Renewables Don't Destabilize Grid - Wind and solar power does not make the U.S. electricity grid less stable, an outgoing federal regulator said on Tuesday, as the Trump administration readies a study that will examine whether renewable energy has had a harmful effect. Colette Honorable, a member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, said at a conference that renewables have different attributes than base load power, which includes coal and nuclear energy, and that those difference need to be overcome. REFINING
Venezuela's Largest Refining Complex to Operate at 42% - Venezuela's largest refining complex plans to operate next month at 42% of its 955,000-barrel-per-day capacity, a level that would require state-run oil company PDVSA to keep increasing fuel purchases, according to internal documents seen by Reuters.
