Dairyland Power Installing Dry Scrubber Technology at Wisconsin Plant to Reduce SO2 Emissions

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Dairyland Power Cooperative (La Cross, Wisconsin), a generation and transmission cooperative, is currently installing two dry flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers at its 40-year-old, 345-megawatt (MW) Genoa Power Station in Vernon County, Wisconsin. The scrubbers are being installed on an Alstom/Combustion Engineering coal tangential-fired supercritical dry bottom boiler (2.345 million pounds per hour, 3,800 psi at 1,010F) to reduce sulfur-dioxide (SO2) emissions by 90% to meet regulatory standards.

Dry flue gas systems use powdered lime, which is injected into the flue gas and then kept in contact with the gas so that it reacts with the SO2 and the vapor. The reacted lime is then captured in a dust collector (fabric filters or electrostatic precipitator). The dry powder can be recirculated to achieve the desired efficiency. To install the scrubbers, Dairyland has Sargent & Lundy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) as the project engineer; Alstom Power (Windsor, Connecticut), a subsidiary of Alstom AS (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France), as the major equipment provider; and The Boldt Company (Appleton, Wisconsin) as the general contractor. Construction commenced in 2008, and the scrubbers are expected to be completed and tied in to the boiler in November or December 2009.
