Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - Ireland's largest biomass project is moving ahead following the signing of a contract by project developer Alstom for a steam turbine from Danish power plant specialist Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC).
BWSC will supply an 18-megawatt (MW) Geared Reaction steam turbine (GRT) for 15.8 MW Evermore Renewable Energy biomass power station being built by BWSC in Northern Ireland. The wood-fuelled biomass power station, which will be constructed on a 10-acre site in Lisahally, is the first of its kind in Ireland and also the first project to be developed and funded by owner ERE Developments.
Daniel Wahler, Alstom's Vice-President for Industrial Steam Turbines, said: "The GRT utilises the latest Alstom technologies in blade designs to give the best performance, thus giving the perfect solution for any sub-60 MW biomass project where total plant efficiency is of the highest importance."
The Evermore project is first project in Northern Ireland to receive funding from the U.K. Green Investment Bank (GIB) . This summer the 96 million ($131 million) project was awarded almost quarter of its funding by the GIB.
"Today's announcement will substantially increase Northern Ireland's renewable energy capacity," explained Shaun Kingsbury, chief executive, UK Green Investment Bank, at the time. "Not only will the project save the same amount of carbon as taking around 77,000 cars off the road, it will also make use of over two million tons of wood, a valuable energy resource that would otherwise have gone to landfill."
Commenting on the Evermore project, U.K. Business Secretary, Vince Cable, said: "The first deal done in Northern Ireland is a landmark moment for the U.K. Green Investment Bank and I'm confident that there will be more to come. Today's investment will have a significant green impact, reducing carbon emissions and diverting wood from landfill. It is also good news for the local area, creating jobs and building a stronger economy."
Evermore will divert over two million tons of wood from landfill and supply enough electricity for around 25,000 homes. When completed in 2015, Evermore will be the largest renewable energy project in Northern Ireland, increasing the amount of renewable electricity currently generated there by approximately 10%.
