Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--A 40-megawatt (MW) biomass plant has officially opened near the town of Brigg, North Lincolnshire, in the U.K.
The plant is the largest dedicated straw-fired biomass plant in the country and can generate enough electricity to power approximately 75,000 homes and offset over 250,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year. The project has been developed by Danish pension group PensionDanmark (Copenhagen), equipment supplier Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor A/S (BWSC) (Allerød, Denmark) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). It cost £160 million ($234 million) to develop, since the partners purchased the project in the summer of 2013. Jakob Baruël Poulsen, managing partner of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, said: "We are delighted to have formally opened our power plant. This has been achieved with great success thanks to our partners, investors and local stakeholders. Thanks must also go to the U.K. government, which has provided the stable regulatory framework that has enabled investments into renewable energy infrastructure such as the Brigg Renewable Energy Plant."
Mayor of North Lincolnshire, Trevor Foster, added: "We are delighted that such high calibre European companies wish to invest in the U.K. and in Lincolnshire in particular. Their announcement today of the Brigg Community Benefit Fund reinforces their commitment to the local area, and we look forward to working with them for many years to come."
The Brigg plant will consume 250,000 tonnes of straw per year, which is being sourced from farmers in the local community. BWSC is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the plant under a 15-year agreement. PensionDanmark and BWSC are also developing a second U.K. straw-fired biomass project in Snetterton, East Anglia, which they bought for £170 million ($249 million) in 2014.
