Design Firm Awarded for Final Design of Proposed $260 Million Commuter Rail Extension in North Carolina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--HDR Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) was selected by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) (Charlotte) to provide final design for a proposed $260 million North Corridor Commuter Rail Extension in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Final design began in December 2007 for the construction of a 25-mile rail system extending along the existing Norfolk Southern rail line (the "O" line) from Center City in Charlotte to Mooresville, North Carolina, in Southern Iredell County paralleling Graham Street in the south and Old Statesville Road in the north. The extension will include 10 stations. Construction is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2009 with completion slated for fall 2011. However, this could change due to funding.

Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas (Charlotte, North Carolina) was selected early on to provide conceptual design and environmental impact study for the proposed rail extension back in 2005.

CATS, managed by the Public Transit Department, manages operations for the city's transit services, which include planning regional transit systems like bus rapid transit, light rail, commuter rail and bus service within their six-county area. They currently serve Mecklenburg County which includes the city of Charlotte, Davidson, Huntersville, Cornelius, Matthews, Pineville and Mint Hill. Transit planning is presently occurring, which includes the development of five transit corridors. Light Rail Transit has been approved for the South Corridor.
