Design Firms Awarded for $250 Million Heating Plant Expansion in Wisconsin

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Potter Lawson Incorporated (Madison, Wisconsin) and Power Engineers Collaborative LLC (Brookfield, Wisconsin) were selected to provide architectural and engineering services for the proposed $250 million Charter Street Heating Plant Expansion for the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Designs are currently under way for the renovation and expansion of the existing heating plant and will include the refiring of the existing four coal boiler units. The units will be refired with natural gas or biomass. The expansion also will include the addition of a new 350,000-pound-per-hour circulating fluidized bed boiler that will burn 100% biomass. A construction management firm will be selected by the end of this year. Construction is anticipated to begin in early summer 2010. Overall completion is slated for fall 2011, with operations beginning in 2012.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, founded in 1848, is located on 935 acres. The enrollment is currently listed as more than 42,000. In the 2007-08 school year, the university had an operating budget of more than $2 billion.
