Developers in Washington Look to Increase Renewable Resources by More Than 16%

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers planning to add renewable power generation are looking at increasing the current almost 22,000 megawatts (MW) by 16% to more than 25,500 MW. They are proposing 28 projects worth almost $6 billion. The Washington projects vary from thermal (biomass to landfill-to-gas), to wind energy, to hydroelectric (conventional, pumped-storage and tidal/wave).

There are two thermal projects: Qualco Energy ‘s (Monroe, Washington) 1 MW biomass plant near Monroe and Klickitat Public Utility District No. 1’s (Goldendale, Washington) 9 MW landfill-gas-energy project.

The 14 hydroelectric projects account for the majority of the power and range from a 0.7 MW tidal project to a 2,000 MW pumped-storage project for more than 2,300 MW. The majority of the hydroelectric projects are owned by utilities in Washington, including Okanogan County Public Utility District No. 1 (Okanogan, Washington), Public Utility District No. 1 of Snohomish (Everett, Washington), Public Utility District No. 1 of Pend Oreille (Newport, Washington), Puget Sound Energy (OTC:PGD) (Bellevue, Washington) and Tacoma Public Utilities (Tacoma, Washington). The largest of the renewable power projects is the 2,000 MW Sentinel Mountain Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Plant near Beverly in Grant County, Washington, proposed by independent power producer United Power Corporation (Discovery Bay, California).

The balance of more than 1,200 MW that is planned is the addition of 12 wind energy projects ranging from 11 MW to about 240 MW. Five of the plants are owned by Washington utilities, and the other seven are owned by private energy produces like Windy Point Partners LLC (Chicago, Illinois) that are developing the 242MW Windy Point Windfarm (Goldendale, Washington).
