Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Operational power generation capacity in Tennessee currently amounts to more than 22,700 megawatts (MW), and developers are hoping to increase this output by about 11.6%, or 2,630 MW, at a cost of about $4 billion. More than 10,000 MW of Tennessee's power is produced from coal, a production process that has a great deal of negative impact on the environment. About 12,000 MW of Tennessee's power is hydroelectric, natural gas, nuclear fission and oil, which are considered to have less negative impact on the environment.

Four of the hydroelectric projects will be new grassroot projects that will produce up to 275 MW, the other two projects will be replacements of four 16-MW units with new 25-MW units for a gain of 36-MW, bringing the new hydroelectric generation to 311 MW, at a cost of about $305 million. The 1,220-MW nuclear project is the completion of the Unit 2 power generator at Watts Bar Power Plant near Spring City. Construction of the unit was stopped in 1988 and is now expected to be complete by 2014 at an additional cost of about $2.5 billion. The balance of the 1,135 MW of new generation will utilize clean burning natural gas and waste heat to produce power from combined-cycle units at a cost of about $1.05 billion.
