Disney Cogen to Replace Natural Gas-Fired Combustion Turbine

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Reedy Creek Improvement District (Lake Buena Vista, Florida), serving part of Orange and Osceola counties, has scheduled the replacement of a 40-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired combustion turbine/generator (CT) at its cogeneration plant in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The 40 MW CT will be replaced with a larger 55 MW CT, allowing Reedy Creek to meet 29% of the district electrical demand in-house. The plant is operated by Reedy Creek Energy Services (Lake Buena Vista, Florida), a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) (Burbank, California).

The cogeneration plant, with a staff of about twenty, provides power, compressed air, water, and steam for Disney World's HVAC operations. The new 55 MW GE LM6000 CT with Brush generator replaces the 1989 vintage 40MW GE LM5000 with a Brush generator. The existing support system for the CT, including, water injection, inlet air coolers, and CO catalyst will not only insure unit performance, but also maintain low NOx and CO emissions.

The construction for the upgrade is supposed to begin in the fourth quarter of 2005, with completion by the first quarter of 2006. Engineering for the upgrade is being performed by the Jacksonville, Florida, office of the Harris Group Incorporated (Seattle, Washington), and construction is being handled by the Tampa office of The Industrial Company (TIC) (Steamboat Springs, Colorado).
