Dixie Biodiesel Plant in Alabama Expected to Go Online in June

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Investor-owned Dixie Biodiesel LLC (Moulton, Alabama) is expected to have a new biodiesel plant in Moulton online and producing fuel by mid-June. The project has been in the works since late 2007, and plant construction started in August 2008. The plant was built in an existing building on 9282 Alabama Highway 157 in Lawrence County.

The plant will process vegetable oils and animal fats into 10.5 million gallons of biodiesel per year. The facility consists of three batch transesterification reactor units and three natural-gas-fired boilers feeding steam to each reactor unit. There are also three 12,000-gallon soybean oil/animal fat storage tanks, one 30,000-gallon and two 6,000-gallon finished product storage tanks and a 10,000-gallon methanol storage tank.

Plant owner David Carraway said that construction activity is wrapping up and that equipment testing and commissioning should start later this month. The plant is expected to be fully operational by mid-June. Cost estimates to construct the facility were in the $10 million range.

Currently, there are no biodiesel plants running in Alabama. The only other operating plant, owned by Green River Biodiesel Incorporated, was shut down in February when fuel prices started to drop. A plant planned by Perihelion Global Incorporated, now owned by NYMET Holdings Incorporated (PINKSHEETS:NYMH) (Santa Rosa Beach, Florida), was to be built in Opp, Alabama, but was considered a failed business by its new owners and abandoned.
