Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--DONG Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) has decided not to invest in a £450 million ($588 million) offshore wind energy hub in the Humber region of the U.K.

The company said that it will not be following through on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed with Able UK (Billingham, England) last year to invest in the Able Marine Energy Park (AMEP) in the Humber region in east England.

"DONG Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with Able U.K. in July 2015 to explore the potential opportunities for using AMEP to support construction of our windfarm pipeline," a spokesman for DONG said. "However, following a detailed review we have concluded that the timescales for development of such a hub would preclude it providing support for any of our planned projects."

A statement added: "The Strategic Review of East Coast Staging and Construction Facilities, which reported on 5 August, included a thorough examination of potential hub sites including the proposed Able Marine Energy Park (AMEP) in the Humber. It has concluded that current ports can support demand from the anticipated offshore wind project pipeline, and it would be difficult to justify the scale of investment required to promote a single large-scale staging and manufacturing facility."

The company said it remained committed to windfarm projects in the region.

In February this year, Industrial Info reported that DONG had committed to going ahead with the $6 billion Hornsea Project One offshore project off the east coast of England. Located 120 kilometers (km) off the coast of Yorkshire in the North Sea, Hornsea Project One will have a generating capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW), enough to power more than one million homes. It comprises the 600-megawatt (MW) Hornsea Heron and 600-MW Hornsea Njord projects. On completion in 2020, it will be largest offshore windfarm, a title currently held by another U.K. project, the 630-MW London Array windfarm located in Thames Estuary in England.
