Duke Energy Resurrects Former Grassroot Sites for Nuclear Generation
When the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) started looking at revising its licensing procedures, one of the companies that said it might be interested was Duke Energy.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)-- Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is studying the addition of nuclear units at five sites. Three of the sites are expansions of existing nuclear stations, and the other two are grassroot locations. The William States Lee III Nuclear Station (Cherokee Falls, South Carolina) and the Perkins Nuclear Station (Cooleemee, North Carolina) were both being developed in the late 1970s but were cancelled because of financial constraints. The Lee project was originally scheduled to bring two units online in 1987 and 1989, and the Perkins units were projected to go commercial in 1991 and 1993.
If Duke Energy were to build all seven units, it would cost more than $20 billion to bring the 7,700 megawatts of additional nuclear generation online. Duke is considering using Westinghouse Electric Corporations Advance Passive Reactor (AP-1000) technology for the new units. These nuclear projects would begin going online in 2015.
