East Kentucky Power Clean Coal Power Project Success Spawns 2,200 Megawatts of Additional Projects

EKPC is so pleased with the operations of this unit that they are developing an additional three duplicate units to meet the new baseload requirements for member utilities.

Released Monday, May 08, 2006

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). East Kentucky Power Cooperative (EKPC) (Winchester, Kentucky) has 2,680-megawatts (MW) of generation capacity. In 2002, the company began construction of a 268 MW coal-fired atmospheric fluidized bed boiler (ACFB) with steam turbine/generator, known as E A Gilbert 03 at the H L Spurlock site in Mason County, near Maysville, Kentucky. The unit began operation in March 2005 to meet new baseload requirements. This model unit’s operation has properties that include a 98% removal of sulfur dioxide and 80% less NOx reduction than that of the older conventional coal-fired plants.

EKPC is so pleased with the operation of the new unit that they are developing an additional three duplicate units to meet the new baseload requirements for their member utilities. The units under study consist of H L Spurlock at the same location and two units at the J K Smith Power Station in Clark County near Trapp, Kentucky, where the utility also has plans for an additional 500 MW of natural gas-fired peaking power. The addition of these units will increase EKPC’s generation capacity by 49.8% to over 4,000 MW.

This model has been so well received that EKPC is collaborating with another cooperative in Montana for the 250 MW Highwood Generating Station near Great Falls, Montana. The new cooperative Southern Montana Electric Generating and Transmission Cooperative has received air permit approval for the project, with some modifications required for additional mercury reduction and are continuing forward with the project.
