Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ElectriCities of North Carolina Incorporated (Raleigh, North Carolina) a 90-member not-for-profit government service organization is looking for build, own and operate (BOO) developers of landfill-gas-to-energy power plants. The gas for these projects is supplied by decaying garbage, from which methane gas is recovered and used as fuel to drive either small combustion turbine/generators or internal combustion engine/generators. Many landfills currently have a flare system that burns off methane gas. These projects will utilize the methane for power generation, helping North Carolina meet new alternative-fuels requirements.
ElectriCities is currently proposing to look at two landfills in the cities of High Point and Albemarle, North Carolina. According to Matt Schull, Power Supply Manager, the plants will probably be only 1 or 2 megawatts each. The developers' new plants will have gas-capture systems with a gas scrubbing system and compressors to provide the combustion turbines or internal combustion engines with a constant fuel flow. Feasibility studies of the landfills are expected to take place within the next six months. If found viable, project construction could start in 2010.
