Electronuclear Schedules Brazil's Angra II Nuclear Plant Maintenance and Refueling Shutdown

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In August 2009, the Brazilian nuclear power company Eletronuclear (Rio de Janeiro) will shut down the 1,350-megawatt (MW) Angra II nuclear power plant in order to carry out annual maintenance and refueling. The shutdown is expected to last about 25 days and will be executed by Areva SA (EPA:CEI) (Paris, France), plant officials told Industrial Info.

The plant's equipment was supplied by Siemens KWU, and since 2001, when Angra II became operational, Areva has been performing the plant's annual outage maintenance. Areva has been involved in two other projects with Eletronuclear: the construction of Angra III and the modernization of Angra I, which is currently finishing a 100-day outage and is expected to be reconnected to the national grid on June 6, 2009. Recently, the state-owned company announced that on May 15, 2008, a failure during the decontamination process caused a leak of radioactive material. Eletronuclear reported that the incident did not cause any environmental impact or damage.

Eletronuclear, a subsidiary of Eletrobras (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), was established in 1997 for the operation and construction of nuclear power plants in Brazil. Eletronuclear owns and operates the nuclear complex Central Nuclear Almirante Alvaro Alberto, which is formed by Angra I (657 MW), Angra II (1,350 MW) and the future Angra III (1,350 MW). The complex is strategically located near the three principal state capital cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte.
