Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Endesa Eco, a subsidiary of Endesa Chile (NYSE:EOC), is currently developing the first windfarm on the SIC, a wind sourced power generation project located in the fourth region of Chile. The wind park, to be completed by year-end, will be located in the Canela community, Choapa province, approximately 186 miles from the capital Santiago de Chile.

The project, with an estimated total cost of $32 million, will have an installed capacity of about 18 MW and will rely on wind energy to generate electricity for the Central Interconnected Electricity System (SIC). With an average annual generation of approximately 47,698 MWh, the project will reduce emissions by 25,981 tons of CO2 per year.

The Danish company Vestas Eolica S.A.U. (NYSE:VWS) will supply and commission 11 wind turbines with 1650 kW of installed capacity. The 11 generators will be connected to the substation through the 23 KV line. At the substation electricity will be transformed to 220 KV and transferred to the grid, to which is connected through two 220 kV lines. These lines connect to the Los Vilos-Pan de Azucar high tension line. The generators will be place in one single axis in a west-east orientation. Each tower will be placed at least three times the diameter of the rotor distance from each other.

During the first two years, the technology provider, Vestas will handle operation of the windfarm, and through this period, the Danish company will train local Endesa Eco. Also, the control of the power generation in the first two years will be executed, via telemetry, from Vestas control room in Zaragoza, Spain, until local capacity is developed.

The inclusion of the Canela Windfarm Project with its 18 MW of installed capacity and an average 47.6 GWh annual generation will directly reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by fossil fuel thermal energy plants that currently, and will continue to operate in the Chilean system.

When completed, the Canela project will be the largest wind power plant in Chile and only the second wind power plant installed in the country.
