Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enel SpA (Rome, Italy), primarily through its renewables subsidiary Enel Green Power North America (Andover, Massachusetts), has been hard at work in the U.S. and Canada. Last year, the company added nearly 2 gigawatts (GW) of wind, solar and energy storage projects to North America's generation mix. The company has announced plans to install another 5 GW of renewables generation and battery energy storage capacity in North America through 2025. Industrial Info is tracking more than $17 billion worth of active of Enel projects in North America.

Examples of the company's projects include the Fence Post solar and battery energy storage system (BESS), which is under construction near Kerens, Texas, about 65 miles southeast of Dallas. The solar facility will use an estimated 397,000 photovoltaic panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide a nameplate capacity of 240 megawatts (MW). The BESS unit will use lithium-ion battery technology to provide 90 MW of power when the sun isn't shining. Construction kicked off early last year, and the projects are expected to be completed in the coming months. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the report on the solar facility and click here for the report on the BESS.

Other combined solar power and BESS developments include the Stampede facility near Saltillo, Texas, about 100 miles northeast of Dallas. The solar farm will provide more than 258 MW of power generation, while the BESS will provide an additional 100 MW of power. Construction is expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers can click here for the report on the solar farm and here for the BESS report.

Enel also has a substantial North American wind power project portfolio. Among the company's wind projects presently under construction is the Alta II windfarm near Dewitt, Illinois. Engineering, procurement and construction company IEA Constructors Incorporated (Indianapolis, Indiana) broke ground on the facility in 2021 and is expected to wrap up construction in the coming months. The windfarm will use a mixture of 2.3-MW and 4.5-MW turbines to provide a nameplate generation capacity of about 200 MW. Subscribers can click here for the full report.

In the planning phase is the company's South Rock wind project near Fairfax, Missouri. Construction could kick off next year and would include erecting 122 turbines, each rated at 2 MW, to provide 244 MW of nameplate generation capacity. Subscribers can click here for more information.

But Enel isn't content to stop with developing renewable energy generation. In an aim to become a more vertically integrated company in the North American power sector, the company has plans to establish a photovoltaic module manufacturing plant at an undisclosed location, although northern Alabama is in the running. The facility will manufacture bifacial solar modules, initially targeting a production capacity of 3 GW per year, which will ramp up to 6 GW. Construction is expected to begin this year, with production at the plant commencing in 2024.
