Energia Argentina Opens Salliquelo Gas Plant in Buenos Aires

Reports related to this article:

Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energia Argentina S.A.'s (Enarsa) (Buenos Aires) began operations at its Salliquelo Gas Plant in Buenos Aires. This represents the end of the first phase of the Nestor Kirchner gas pipeline project, which is designed to transport gas from the Vaca Muerta shale reservoir to the Buenos Aires province, then to northern Argentina.

Salliquelo has a capacity of 5 million cubic meters per day (MMm3/d) and is one of the project's two gas-compressing plants; the other is the Tratayen plant in Vaca Muerta. Together, they compress natural gas to be transported through the 573-kilometer Nestor Kirchner gas pipeline, which, combined with the gas plants, has the capacity to transport 21 MMm3/d.

According to Enarsa's statement, the pipeline system's capacity has been surpassed after the injection of 23 MMm3/d of natural gas. With Salliquelo's start-up, Enarsa foresees saving US$130 million in 2025 by replacing liquid fuels during the winter months.

This pipeline system was one of the flagship projects of Argentina's most recent government. Although the Salliquelo plant was expected to begin operations in September 2023, delays impacted the project.

In addition to Nestor Kirchner, Enarsa is developing the second phase of its Gasoducto Norte project. This system will connect Buenos Aires to the northern provinces of Cordoba, Salta, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero, Catamarca, La Rioja and Tucuman to transport gas from Vaca Muerta.

The objective is to reduce imports and utilize the internal production of natural gas, which increases during the winter months. Subscribers can click here for a list of detailed reports for projects related to Gasoducto Norte.
