Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Flush with anticipated revenue from big data centers, electricity provider Entergy Mississippi (Jackson, Mississippi) plans to pour an additional $300 million into power grid upgrades in the state.
The goal of the "Superpower Mississippi" initiative is to cut power outages in half in the next five years across the company's 45-county service area, it announced on September 24. Entergy Mississippi is one of four state subsidiaries of Entergy (New Orleans, Louisiana).
"With this additional $300 million, we're investing 50% more in reliability to reach a 50% reduction in outages, all at 0% added cost to our customers," said Haley Fisackerly, the chief executive officer of Entergy Mississippi.
The plan, which requires the approval of the Mississippi Public Service Commission, would include installing stronger poles that are designed to withstand extreme weather, implementing more smart devices and real-time monitoring systems, and increasing tree-trimming and dead tree removals to help prevent outages.
Entergy said vegetation-related outages in the Magnolia State have increased due to the millions of dead trees caused by drought in 2023 and intensified severe weather.
The company maintained the plan would come at no additional cost to existing customers. Instead, revenue from companies like Amazon (Seattle, Washington) and other large industrial power users would be used to foot the bill.
State sales tax exemptions for planned Amazon data center operations will total about $558 million, according to Bloomberg, which cited information provided by the Mississippi Development Authority.
