Entergy's Texas Power Plants Complete NOx Emissions Reduction Projects

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Entergy Gulf States (Beaumont, Texas) a division of Entergy Corporation (NYSE: ETR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) installed Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units in the fall of 2002 and spring of 2003 on two natural gas-fired boilers at its 542 megawatt Lewis Creek Power Station in Willis, Texas (PEC 01008531, PLANT 1014927). The goal of the project was to reduce Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions for the plant, which falls into the Texas non-attainment area, of Montgomery County. The installed (catalyst in-line) SCR units are projected to keep NOx emissions well below the regulations and assist in the emissions averaging program for other units in the state.

Entergy selected The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W) (Barberton, Ohio), a division of McDermott International Incorporated (NYSE: MDR) (New Orleans, Louisiana) to build, engineer and install the SCR's. B&W is also the manufacturer of the natural gas opposed-fired boilers, each operating at 1.687MM lb/hr, 2,200psi @ 1,000F that drive two Siemens/Westinghouse steam turbine/generators each 271 MW. Entergy's Project Manager Nolan Fredrick indicated that after a year of use with one SCR and six months with the other they were very pleased with the results.
