Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Enviva LP (Bethesda, Maryland), a privately held leading manufacturer of process biomass, is proceeding with construction activity on a $52 million wood pellet manufacturing plant in Ahoskie, North Carolina.
The company acquired the former Georgia Pacific (Atlanta, Georgia) lumber mill in Hertford County, North Carolina, and is performing building and site upgrades and installing a large dryer.
The plant will process more than 600,000 tons per year of raw wood into 330,000 tons per year of high-quality wood fuel pellets. When completed in first-quarter 2012, the plant will create 53 jobs and boost relationships with local timber and fiber suppliers.
The company also acquired the former Giant Cement port terminal in Norfolk, Virginia, to support growing product export to overseas markets. The terminal will support product distribution from the Virginia plant and two new plants in Amory and Perkinston, Mississippi.
The port terminal has the capacity to receive, store and load more than 3 million tons of wood pellets per year. The terminal has a 60,000-ton storage silo; single and dual truck bays; three rail spurs with a 200-rail car capacity; and a 750-foot dock to handle vessels with 38-foot drafts.
When all three plants are running at full capacity, Enviva will have the capability to produce more than 580,000 tons per year of high-quality wood fuel pellets.
Industrial Info's North American Wood Fuel Pellet Database includes 59 operational plants producing more than 25,000 tons annually, and 37 projects under way.
