European 'Green Maritime Corridor' Confirmed

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--A "green maritime corridor" linking Portugal and northern Europe through the production and supply of green hydrogen has been confirmed by lead developer Madoqua (Porto Salvo, Portugal).

With the backing of leading shipping groups, financial institutions, hydrogen technology companies and the ports of Sines (Portugal), Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Duisport (Germany), the corridor project aims to establish a shipping route where low-emission shipping solutions are utilized and low-carbon fuels are transported. The partners have agreed to promote green hydrogen derivatives alongside carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies, with the aim of contributing to European energy independence by securing low-cost renewable fuel supply from Portugal.

Madoqua, which is behind the 500-megawatt (MW) MadoquaP2X green hydrogen project in the Port of Sines, is leading the way with this initiative, which is expected to realize a joint investment of more than 500 million euro (US$525 million). Industrial Info is tracking five projects related to the ongoing MadoquaP2X project--Europe's largest green fuels project--and the planned Madoqua Green Fuels Terminal amounting to almost US$1.4 billion. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can click here for the reports. MadoquaP2X will produce both green ammonia and e-methanol, while the Madoqua Green Fuels Terminal will store, handle and bunker alternative fuels in the port of Sines.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) (Tokyo, Japan) has signed on recently to act as the shipping logistics partner, overseeing the transportation of green fuels and liquefied CO2 along the corridor while promoting the use of zero-emission ships to decarbonize the maritime transport sector. Transporting captured and liquefied CO2 will also help create a supply chain for sequestration of carbon emissions in Norway.

Marloes Ras, chief commercial officer at Madoqua, said: "Energy transition is a journey, where partnerships are key to success. Our recent ports collaboration is designed to make this approach a reality. Developing new generation facilities focused on producing e-fuels is just one piece of the integrated green fuel corridor puzzle. A significant amount of existing port, bunkering services and transportation infrastructure must be either re-purposed, augmented or built to meet the upcoming demand for e-fuels from the shipping and end use industry."

Phase 1 of MadoquaP2X will use 500 MW of electrolysis to produce 51,000 tons of green hydrogen and 300,000 tons of green ammonia annually. Using renewable energy, it is projected to avoid 430,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. Phase 2 will see electrolysis capacity expanded to 1.2 gigawatts (GW), which will boost production to 150,000 tons of green hydrogen and 1 million tons of green ammonia each year, bringing the total investment to 2.8 billion euro (US$2.94 billion). MadoquaP2X was one of seven projects chosen by the EU in its first auction for renewable hydrogen projects last year, which saw almost 720 million euro (US$781 million) awarded to seven projects. A second, much bigger auction, with up to 3 billion euro (US$3.24 billion) in funding, has been promised for later this year by Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen.
