Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Contracts for fast-tracked combined-cycle power plants and plants integrating and utilizing all sources of heat and power generated into an energy efficient package have become a major feature in the power generation industry scene in 2006. Alstom (France) has signed for two projects in Italy, which demonstrates the aspects of fast execution and combined-cycle cogeneration employing its GT26 gas turbines.
The $380 million Abruzzoenergia project in Gissi, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, will be based on two GT26 sequential combustion gas turbines with associated steam turbines and electrical generators. Alstom will design, supply, install and commission the 800-megawatt (MW) power plant and will also supply two heat recovery steam generators, air-cooled condenser systems, a state-of-the-art distributed control system and the balance of plant equipment. This fast-track project will see the first turbine unit start to produce power in November 2007, and the second unit in December 2007.
Eurosviluppo Elettrica awarded an Alstom-led consortium a $430 million turnkey project for the construction of an 800 MW combined-cycle cogeneration plant in Scandale, in the Calabria region of southern Italy. Alstom will supply the project with two GT26 gas turbines, two steam turbines, four TOPAIR generators, two air-cooled condensers, the plant control system and the balance of plant for the power island. Project completion is scheduled for April 2008.
At Scandale the waste heat produced by the power plant will be re-used for external industrial processes such as drying wood. This total approach to all forms of energy coming from the plant increases the amount of fuel converted into useable energy to 75% compared to the 56.5% without the integrated cogeneration.
Service contracts for the Gissi and Scandale power stations are under negotiation. Both plants are designed to produce very low levels of NOx and CO emissions. Investment on the two projects will total about $810 million, of which Alstoms share will come to $595 million.
In the last quarter of 2005, Alstom won a contract from Energia SpA to construct a GT26-based 760 MW plant at Modugno in southern Italy. During the same period, the company was awarded a contract for two 400 MW GT26 powered plants in Spain, which will bring the total GT26-based generating capacity in Spain to 4,000 megawatts.
