Florida Municipal Power Agency Prepares to Bring Treasure to the Sunshine State

Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) (Orlando, Florida) is set to start construction on the $257 million, 300-megawatt Treasure Coast Energy Center located in Fort Pierce, Florida. Groundbreaking for the project will be held Wednesday, August 9, 2006. With a two-year construction schedule, FMPA anticipates full commercial start-up for the project during the summer of 2008. The project will consist of a single combined cycle power island that will feature a 180-megawatt natural gas-fired GE Power Systems MS7001FA combustion turbine generator, a duct-fired Vogt Power International heat recovery steam generator, and a 120-megawatt GE Power Systems D11 steam turbine generator.

The plant will also use recycled water from a planned Fort Pierce Utilities Authority Wastewater Reclamation Facility being constructed just north of the new power plant. Upon completion, Fort Pierce Utilities Authority will retire the 142-megawatt Harry D King Power Station, which has served the city since 1953. Treasure Coast will not only replace the 142-megawatt that the older power plant produced, but will generate an additional 158 megawatts for the growing demands for the city of Fort Pierce.

Utility Engineering (UE) based in Denver, Colorado will perform the engineering services for the project and The Industrial Company (TIC), headquartered in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, will act as the general contractor.
