Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited (Auckland, New Zealand) is planning to perform maintenance on the Whareroa Cogeneration Plant in 2014.
Fonterra is preparing for an annual maintenance outage at the 70-megawatt (MW) Whareroa gas-fired cogeneration plant, which is located at Fonterra's factory in Hawera, Taranaki. The station produces 380 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity a year, fulfilling the electricity needs of the plant, as well as feeding more than 60% into the national grid.
Fonterra confirmed that all the four 11-megawatt (MW) solar gas turbine units would undergo a minor, one-week shutdown starting in June 2014. Plant officials said that once the units are offline, they would also address other repairs on the boiler and perform any needed repairs to the balance of the plant's equipment before returning the units online.
Fonterra will work with Solar Turbines (Melbourne, Australia), the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), which has a rolling three-year service agreement for the gas turbine maintenance. The boiler maintenance contract has been awarded to RCR Energy (Auckland, New Zealand), while balance of plant work, along with other subcontractor jobs, will be awarded as required next year.
Fonterra plans to perform maintenance on the steam units for the entire plant when the gas turbines are switched off for maintenance next year.
The company is in the early planning stage to upgrade the heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) attached to two of the gas units in 2016. This project is still in the initial design phase, according to the plant officials, Fonterra is also considering replacing the HRSGs, subject to their condition and economic factors.
