FPL Energy Driving Windfarm Development in North Dakota

However, the question remains, where will all the windfarms go? At present, North Dakota seems to be the answer for a few of the nation's leading windfarm developers. According to the North Dakota Public Service Commission, the state currently has 1,672 megawatts of wind capacity.

The nation's leading wind developer, FPL Energy, a subsidiary of FPL Group Incorporated (NYSE:FPL), already operates five wind projects in North Dakota. The company has a total of 328.1 megawatts (MW) in operation in the state.

FPL Energy has just embarked on a $300 million venture to construct a 150-MW windfarm in southeast North Dakota. The windfarm would consist of 100 turbines, a substation, and a transmission line and would cover approximately 20 square miles of leased private land. Including this project, FPL expects to have 517 MW of wind capacity by the end of the year.

North Dakota has a lot of land available for windfarms, and one of the key incentives to windfarm developers is the existing national tax credit expected to expire in December. If Congress extends the current tax credit, there could be plenty more windfarms in North Dakota's future.
