GE Oil & Gas Wins Service Contract for Angola's 5.2 Million-Ton LNG Plant

Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer Angola's Soyo LNG liquefaction and export facility, which is 315 kilometers north of the country's capital Luanda, is set to ship its first LNG cargo this quarter. When in full operation, the plant will produce about 5.2 million tons of LNG and related gas products annually.

The facility's operator, Angola LNG, has signed a long-term service agreement (LTSA) with GE Oil & Gas (Florence, Italy) to increase overall plant efficiency and provide maximum availability for the key gas compression equipment.

The LTSA will cover two GE gas turbine-driven compression chains and will include additional plant equipment to ensure continuous technical assistance and an onsite team of GE field service engineers to apply effective maintenance approaches. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) spare parts will be supplied to optimize performance and maximize mean time between maintenance. A local contractual performance manager at the site will oversee the day-to-day service operations.

"We will work in close collaboration with the operators in Angola, contributing to the development of the local workforce. Our combined team will apply GE's outage excellence approach, adopting proven methods to increase machine uptime," said Girish Saligram, a contractual services leader of GE Oil & Gas Global Services.

The $10 billion Angola LNG project is owned by a consortium consisting of Angola's state-owned oil company Sonangol (22.8%), Chevron (NYSE:CVX) (San Ramon, California) (36.4%) and Total SA (NYSE:TOT) (Paris, France), BP plc (NYSE:BP) (London, England) and Eni SpA (NYSE:E) (Rome, Italy) each with 13.6%.

Angola is targeting Asian markets for its gas exports including the world's largest LNG consumers, Japan and South Korea, and the growing markets in India and China.
